Eurozone 2023 themes: A race against time before next winter
The energy crisis will continue to dominate the European macro outlook next year. Following a recession at the start of the year, we expect a gradual recovery once the energy emergency eases, as a decline in inflation should allow household real incomes recover. But lower gas supplies will be a key risk to the outlook if Europe fails to secure enough energy or adjust its demand ahead of next winter.

Ángel Talavera is Head of European Economics and is responsible for developing Oxford Economics’ macro view on the region, as well as producing macroeconomic forecasts for Spain. He manages a team of 12 economists producing regional and country-specific thematic research on over 30 countries, as well as contributing to the editorial line of Oxford Economics globally. Angel’s work also involves presenting the outlook to clients around the world and he is frequently quoted in international media.
Prior to joining Oxford Economics, Ángel spent over five years in two different stints as an economist at FocusEconomics, a Barcelona-based macroeconomic consulting firm. In between, he worked at Beazley Group, an insurance firm based in London, where he focused on country risk.

Daniel Kral is a Senior Economist within the macroeconomics forecasting division of Oxford Economics. He joined Oxford Economics in April 2021 in London and leads the coverage of the Nordic region. Daniel holds a Master of Research from University College London where his thesis won the Frank Carter prize for the best post-graduate thesis in 2014.
