Inflation risks and the global monetary boom

Online | April 14, 2021

Are markets right to have become more nervous about inflation risks, and is the global monetary boom still no reason to panic? We examine these two linked questions, looking at the causes of current rapid money supply and credit growth, reassessing the arguments as to why this might not be a danger signal, and outlining our view on the extent of inflation risks over the next year or two.

Mapping Africa’s consumer spending landscape

The concentration of individuals increasingly enjoying a rise in discretionary income provides market potential far exceeding that seen outside of these geographies. In this webinar we map Africa’s consumer spending landscape by showing in which cities the most spending is taking place and exploring where we can expect to see the strongest growth in consumer spending over the next decade.

Global outlook: Too early to write off a Goldilocks rebound

Online | March 22, 2021

Developments since the beginning of the year have prompted us to revise up substantially our global GDP forecast for 2021. But despite the more optimistic outlook and rising headline inflation, we are still sceptical that a sustained period of high inflation is around the corner. In this webinar we explore the likely recovery path from here and the risks around it as well as the likely response of policymakers to the recent economic and financial market developments.

Fed’s 2021 Challenges: Millions unemployed and fears of spiraling inflation

Online | March 18, 2021

The Fed’s new monetary policy framework is being tested by rising expectations of faster economic growth and inflation. However, despite improvements in health conditions, vaccine dissemination, and significantly more fiscal stimulus, we don’t foresee a “large and persistent” rise in inflation or quick recovery in the labor market. This means the Fed will maintain its very accommodative policy stance.

Will 2021 mark the end of the lowflation era?

Online | February 16, 2021

A key uncertainty for 2021 will be the response of inflation to the disruption caused by the pandemic and this year’s likely strong economic recovery. While headline inflation is already beginning to climb and looks set to rise further in the months ahead, our view is that any pick-up in underlying inflation pressures will be far less dramatic and that the likelihood of sustained above target inflation is still relatively small.

Africa watchlist for 2021

Online | January 29, 2021

This year’s overriding macroeconomic theme will be one of uneven recovery. While somewhat synchronised, the rate and extent of recovery will vary considerably, both across and within regions. Our first webinar of the year identifies the key factors that will be driving these divergences across the African continent, also highlighting some potential wildcard developments that should be on every Africa analyst’s watchlist. We look at why Covid-19 will remain a concern throughout 2021, discuss whether the commencement of AfCFTA will have any significance, and show how the continent’s growth hotspot is moving west. We also unpack the likelihood of political upheaval in Nigeria – the continent’s largest economy and most populous nation – and identify a few contenders for Africa’s next major debt default.

Middle East: How strong will the recovery be this year?

Online | January 27, 2021

After a painful 2020, the outlook for the GCC region is looking up as we enter 2021. Covid-19 appears to be more under control than in other parts of the world, vaccines are being rolled out at pace and oil prices have rallied above $50pb, while there have also been positive policy developments such as the rapprochement between Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE and Qatar, the Abraham Accords and policy reforms in several GCC countries. These factors will contribute to a recovery in 2021 following the deep contractions driven by the pandemic and oil price slump last year.

UK & London Economic Outlook

Online | January 26, 2021

2021 began, economically, on the same socially distanced and locked-down note that characterised much of last year. But the rollout of Covid vaccines offers some light at the end of the tunnel. Just how hard have Covid and measures to control the virus struck the economy, and how enduring, or otherwise, might the damage be? And how realistic are hopes that vaccines and other positives could unleash a rapid rebound as pent-up demand is released and consumer and business confidence recovers?  Join us as we discuss our latest outlook for the UK and London economies, including a deep-dive into the tourism sector.

New virus variant, new economic risks

News on vaccine progress has offered some light at the end of the Covid tunnel, but the discovery that more transmissible variants have spread outside the UK and South Africa means the downside risks to our global baseline forecasts are rising once again. In this webinar, we look at the implications of recent Covid-19 developments on global economic prospects for 2021.
