Chloe Parkins with BBC: Paris will benefit from the Olympics, but not immediately during the Games
Despite the excitement and media frenzy surrounding the Paris Olympics, the city has experienced a perhaps unexpected dip in tourism. Chloe Parkins, Senior Economist at Oxford Economics, joined the BBC to shed light on the issue.
“A lot of it is due to the premium that hotel and travelling put on the prices during the event,” Chloe explained. “People who want to go to Paris but do not necessarily attend the game might choose to go elsewhere or visit Paris when it is less busy and slightly more affordable.”
Looking at the broader picture though, Europe is experiencing a robust recovery in terms of international tourism recovery. The Paris Olympics are set to slightly boost tourism recovery in France as a whole, but more so in Paris. We expect international arrivals into Paris rise to 14% above 2019 levels, compared to an 11% increase for France this year.
